I currently use the demo of jaws, and have lately been considering making the switch to window eyes. What does everyone think about window eyes? What program is better? Any suggestions would be great!! Thanks
This is a really chalanging question and one that will probably never be answered to your satisfaction. I use both and really, can't say. Both at this point have equal support of all of our favorite apps such as internet explorer, outlook and outlook expres, and all of the office products which really used to be the big difference between the two. Jaws has a much better help system over all but both offer a key describer mode which is exremely helpfull. Window-eyes command structure is a little more complex but completely remappable. Window-Eyes does not require any activation and does not persay have a limit on installations. There thought is that as long as the licenced user is using the program they can install it on any machine they work on. This is the honnor system of course. Tech support is good on both but I'd say GWMicro's might be a bit more consistant as far as knoledge of the product. Window-Eyes was the best in vista but suposedly jaws 9 is supposed to have really worked on there vista support. so, which one do I prefer? Actually, I really! like system access by serotek. It's cheeper, easier to use, updated very freequently over the internet and very stable and responsive. Okay! I also love voiceover on the Mac(just had to get that in there). Really I think you just have to try them both in demo mode with the apps you use. I teach them all and there are many reasons why one might pick one over the other. If there are any specific questoins I can answer for you please feel free to write or who knows you might catch me on messenger. Have a great day.
Well, as a user of both Window-Eyes and Jaws, i tend to prefer Window-Eyes because of it's stability. Jaws, for me, tends to crash more. Also, Window-Eyes has been known to work better with applications right out fo the box. I wish that Window-Eyes would have a better attribute description like Jaws's Insert+F command instead of a dialogue box. Otherwise, yes, they do both have their individul merits.
Oh, and Jaws tends to have better descriptions of Flash movies, i.e. YouTube, but Window-Eyes tracks beter with the mouse.
I haveuse jaws and window eyes. I like jaws because it is what I use for college and it works quite well with microsoft excel and access. I think window eyes is also good because it is cheaper than jaws and it's good with the internet.
Can someone please explain system access by serotek? Is it reliable? How much does it cost to buy? Is there a demo for it? Is it easy to use programs like music sharing software? Any info about it would be great
Go to serotek.com and yes, there are demo's available. I use system access quite a bit. I am using it now. AT the office I have a windows vista machine and it is the only screen reader that responds quickly enough for me to get my work done. I use it on the internet, e-mail, word and ecxell. My biggest complaint is that it does not read the html of image links or links that are untagged. windoweyes and jaws will do this. otherwise I like it becuase it's updated freequently and is reasonably priced. NVDA is a free screen reader that has a ways to go but is usable if you need a solution that costs nothing. I have surfed the internet with it succesfully.
Is my understanding correct that System Access is also the only truly portable screen reader (i.e. Jaws still requires you to install the video intercept manager on the machine before you could use their USB-version). I knew this to be true a few months back but haven't seen the latest developments from Jaws, WE or Dolphin even.
I'm happy to see Willy is still promoting the Mac, I'd be worried if he wasn't *grin*.
I've used Jaws for a while now and have very little complaints, especially happy with their Excel support and Visual Studio is not too bad, but I just downloaded System Access and, except for the lack of braille support, I'm pretty impressed with it.

Ahh! sir brew: it's like this. To the best of my knowledge all the major screen readers are still requireing that video intercept be installed. System Access does not erquire this at all. Apparenly they do not hook in to the video driver but in to rats! something else.(boy that was helpfull wasn't it?). Actually, I would recommend you visit there site I think it's serotek.com and they have information about that. With the way they are going I have no doubt we will see braille support coming up. They are the only screen reader you can get pushed from the web. Try www.satogo.com and follow the prompts. amazingly once it's actually running you don't have to stay connected to the net. In my opinion this puts them lighyears ahead of the others. I believe that system access is one of those products that is going to quietly sail right over the competitions heads and they will never even achnoledg it. I use it about 80 percent of the time and really like it.
Yeah, I saw the article they wrote on the subject and that's what really got me interested in their product. I was never too hot on the Freedom Box thing they started out with, seemed like an over priced gadget with little functionality, but now they really appear to have grown into something more. I also love the fact they have the developer's blog on there so you can actually keep track of what they are doing.
I don't really feel one can call one's software product portable when you have to install drivers on the host machine before you can even use the USB key.

Well, when I first picked Window Eyes, I liked it 'cause their default synthesizer was DecTalk Access 32. To me it doesn't make a difference now which screen reader I use, I have Window Eyes on this laptop which I'm usin' Realspeak Daniel as my synthesizer now. I just have a few questions about Window Eyes. The first one is about when I turn off Window Eyes. After it is unloaded, I get this speech 32 dialog that when I activate WE again it won't read it. I was just wonderin' if it's because of WE or Realspeak Daniel. It shouldn't be because of the voice because I've ran it with Neospeech Paul before and it never displayed that dialog, and by the way, this is a Windows 98 machine, so even though the manufacturers recommend runnin' 'em on Windows 2000 or higher. And I don't want to sacrifice my Realspeak voice 'cause this is too kick ass. Actually, I'd like to know from you guys in your opinions which of the two real soundin' synthesizers is better, Realspeak or Neospeech? The other major question with WE is the commands in the original Microsoft Outlook. I wanna switch from usin' Outlook Express to usin' the original Outlook because, well, let's just say I fucked it up by tryin' to send someone a horribly large email and everytime I use it it makes my computer slow as hell. So I was just wonderin' if the commands from Outlook Express are the same for the Original Outlook? One other thing, don't say that I can delete it from my Outbox in Outlook Express because I can't. I've tried, and it keeps goin' back into my outbox or it sometimes freezes up my computer.
I'm not sure about those questions.
I have been using JAWS since I started using a computer, but I am also getting used to WindowEyes and I am getting more comfortable with it. It is very good on the Internet! It depends on what you want the screen reader to do. By the way, did you hear that Freedom Scientific is suing GW Micro? There is also beta 1 of WindowEyes 7 on GW Micro's website which can be accessed at www.gwmicro.com
Why is Freedom Scientific suin' GW Micro?
I think because of place markers on the Internet. I'm not totally sure, though.
Theirs a topic on here about that video game bandit. I'm a user of jaws, and I don't find it crashes on me. I've used window eyes, and didn't like ti, because I'm not a fan of the dektalk voices, well, unless their singing, or something.
You don't have to necessarily use the DecTalk voices in Window-Eyes. I'm usin' realspeak Tom with it, and when you purchase Window-Eyes it also comes with the eloquence voices. Just for your information.
That's what I was just going to say! LOL. When you install WindowEyes, it will ask you what synthesizer you want on your computer.
